Cobol Developer – Advanced Application Engineer

Seeking an experienced Cobol Developer / Advanced Application Engineer to join the Software Engineering team. This role involves working on critical financial systems supporting government operations and economic stability in South Africa. Responsibilities include designing, building, and configuring applications to meet complex business and process requirements, operating with a high level of independence, acting as a subject matter expert, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams to deliver quality software solutions. Key tasks include designing, developing, and configuring COBOL-based applications, analyzing business processes, participating in technical discussions, conducting thorough testing, implementing best practices, contributing to build management and release processes, providing mentorship, and continuously improving application development processes.

Strong hands-on experience in COBOL development (mainframe or equivalent environments). Advanced proficiency in Design & Build Enablement (P3 – Advanced). Advanced proficiency in Configuration & Release Management (recommended). Advanced proficiency in Build Management (advantageous). Solid understanding of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) and version control. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented environment. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience) is preferred. Prior experience working on large-scale government or financial systems is preferred. Exposure to modernization or migration projects involving COBOL applications is preferred.
